The Y Giants: Norwich’s Semi-Pro Football Team
On Saturday afternoons in the fall of 1947, football fans filled the stands at the Alumni Field to cheer the Norwich High School team on to victory, as they had for many years. But in that year, fans returned on Sunday to root for the new team in town, the "semi-pro" Norwich Y Giants. For the next five years, the Giants would thrill the Norwich crowd with their style of hard-hitting football and rack up a winning record that was really quite amazing.
Organized by a small group of World War II veterans, the Giants received remarkable support from the Norwich community, and became a symbol of what Norwich was like in the halcyon days between to wars. During the five years, 90 men donned the green and silver of the Y Giants and provided an excitement that rallied the community.
The autumn of 2007 was the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Y Giants football team in Norwich. This book, which appeared as a series of articles in the Evening Sun, is a tribute to this great team. The author, Jim Dunne, searched the archives of the old Norwich Sun for game accounts, and collected memories and anecdotes from former Giants to provide this fascinating history.
