Description
Toward the close of the nineteenth century, summer vacation cottages began to blossom on the shores of Chenango Lake. This small, scenic lake in Chenango County, New York, became a popular vacation spot with hotels offering comfortable accommodations for visitors from local villages and big cities alike. Area residents began to camp in tents, then to build summer residences where they could vacation away from village life and enjoy the cool breezes off the lake. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Chenango Lake experienced a building boom, and summer visitors became a community. Like Christine Gibson’s first book, Wish You Were Here: The Hotels of Chenango Lake, the reader will be transported to a place and time when summers at the lake were leisurely days of boating, berry picking, and family picnics.
